Notes for William Ysidro (Spouse 1)
Wiliam Shely accomplished many constructive things. One of these was the founding of the Traveller family of quarter horse. He and his brother, Lorenzo Dow Shely, kept this outstanding stallion on their ranch in what is now Jim Wells County. Mating Traveller with selected brood mares, they produced some of the finest "short" horse in history. Among them was Little Joe, who sired Zantanon, the "Man of War of Mexico", Texas Chief, Blue Eyes, Lady S and man others. Information taken from Trails and Trials of a Texax Ranger

Source: “Trails and Trails of a Texas Ranger” by William Warren Sterling which states in part, “The only one of the famous brothers that I personally knew was William Y Shely. I met him in 1912 and we were warm friends until his death in 1939. His widow, Mrs Josephine Almond Shely with his daughters, Mrs Elizabeth Shely Newman and Mrs Dorothy Shely ______are among my dearest friends. At my wedding, his son the Late Colonel William Almond Shelyk as one of my groomsmen. Col Shely was a Ranger and served during the Bandit War of 1915. He resigned to accept a comission in the United States Army and was awarded the Legion of Merit.”

I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
