Notes for Allison Van Buren LEMONS
From the "Tucson Daily Citizen", 1 July 1964, in part:
Mr. Lemons Dies: Early Rodeo Rider:
Allison Van Buren Lemons, 74, a Tucson resident nearly 50 years and a pioneer rode contestant here, died yesterday in a local hospital.... In 1914 he was married to the former Ethel Shely in Marathon....
In 1918, Mr. Lemons moved to Tucson to start a career which included a stint as a police detective....
During those early days in Tucson, when Mr. and Mrs. Lemons homesteaded on Wilmot Road, he was a roping contestant in some of the first rodeos held here.
Mr. Lemons, who was an overseer with the highway department for 12 years, was active in politics. A friend of Gov. George W. P. Hunt's family, he stumped the state with former presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan during the 1920's.....
