Notes for Elbridge Seawell HURT
Elbridge was the son of Judge James Mann Hurt, Jr. who was the presiding justice of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
The children shown on the gravestone of Judge E. S. Hurt are his children with his second wife and not his children with Rosalie Ireland Hurt. Rosalie was his first wife and she died on September 18, 1895. He married his second wife in 1898. Her name was Laura Eugenia Burris.
Judge Hurt and Rosalie had three children. They were Anna Penn Hurt (married John Gordon Wilcox), Mattie Douglas Hurt (was a toddler when she died) and Elbridge Ireland Hurt (married Beatrice Vining).
Rosalie and Elbridge were married in the Governor's mansion on September 18, 1884. It was the second wedding of a governor's daughter in the mansion. The first wedding was "Nettie" Houston during Governor Hubbard's term. Her father, Sam Houston, was not living at the time of the wedding so Gov. Hubbard gave her away.
The wedding of Rosalie and Elbridge was the first wedding at the mansion during her father's term in office, Gov. John Ireland.
Elbridge and Laura were married in Henrietta, Clay county Texas in 1898. They had seven children, Lula (1900), Zack Elbridge (1902), Pierre S. (1904), Robert (1906-died in infancy), James Mann (1909), Eugene S. (1911) and George Rider (1913). Elbridge and Laura divorced in the 1920's. The dates on his gravestone are not correct.

Notes for Rosalie (Spouse 1)
Rosalie was married to Elbridge S. Hurt in the Governor's Mansion in Austin, Texas, in 1884. (Rosalie's father, John, was governor from 1883 to 1888.) It was reportedly the first wedding to take place in the Governor's Mansion in Austin.

HURT - IRELAND
Married - At 9 o'clock Thursday morning Mr. E. S. Hurt, a young lawyer and son of Judge Hurt of the court of appeals, was married to Miss Rosalie Ireland, the pretty and interesting daughter of Gov. Ireland, the ceremony taking place at the Governor's mansion in the presence of a few invited friends and relatives of the bride and bridegroom. Rev. Dr. Goodwyn officiated. After a sumptuous repast the couple were accompanied to the depot by their friends, and took the train for Dallas which will be their future home. May their lives prove a bright clysium of earthly happiness (The Austin Weekly Statesman, Austin, Tex., Sept 25, 1884)
