John was the son of James M. Hunt and Martha "Patsy" (Marshall) Hunt.
He married Emily Alexander in Carroll CO, TN on June 10, 1859.
John's wife Emily, appears to have died by 1880, as the minor children are living with various aunts and uncles at this point.
Obituary published in The Milan Exchange on Saturday, April 23 1887, p. 1, as follows:
DIED
Mr. John C. Hurt, aged about fifty five years, died at Blanks's Hotel, after a few days illness. He was well known and had many relatives in Gibson and Carroll counties. He had a cheerful, jovial disposition, with a pleasant word or joke for all, and, we suppose, did not have an enemy anywhere. His many friends here will miss him sadly. A large crowd attended his burial at Oakwood, where the service was conducted by the Rev. J. P. Weaver.
