Notes for John J. LAWRENCE
(1) Jun 2002: Pedigree Resource File CD 2 submitted 4 Jun 1999 by Harriet Hester Johnson, 311 Fifth Street, Paintsville, Kentucky 41240 Source: Personal knowledge of Warren Lawrence - 1990; Census: 1870 Benton County, Arkansas (Tom Lawrence - also, Tom's sister's family - Joe and Artie Taylor); 1880 Coal Township, Vernon County, Missouri (Tom Lawrence - They lived just north of Deerfield); 1900 Barton County, Missouri (Tom Lawrence); 1910 {Union Township}, 1920 Barton County, Missouri (John Lawrence).

As told by John's children, John was about 11 years old when his mother died near Deerfield. From then on his father moved a lot. Part of the time Tom's children were cared for by Tom's sisters' families.

1900 Census, near Claremore, Indian Territory, Felix Smith; Barton County, Missouri, marriage book H page 160. "Bessie and John met when she was working for John's aunt, Becky Lawrence Cox and her husband Hugh Cox. John lived nearby and was also working for Becky and Hugh Cox as a farm hand." as told by Bessie's children.

Bessie told, "Her father decided to leave Claremore, Indian Territory and move south to Muscogee, Indian Territory, but they were stopped at a road block at the crossing of the Verdigres River because of cholera on the other side. So Felix Smith turned around 180 degrees and came to Barton County, Missouri instead." Felix had a brother, John S. "Jack" Smith already living in Barton County.

John and Bessie Lawrence had a farm between Haines Grove and Caput communities in Union Township, Barton County, Missouri. Their last four children were born on this farm.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
