Sam was named for Dr. Samuel Newman of Danville, Virginia and Uncle Garrett Cochran. He graduated from Morehead High School in 1967 and served two years in the Army training scout dogs. Sam earned a degree at Rockingham Community College and was a supervisor at Karastan (Fieldcrest-Canon Inc.) Mills until 1990. Just prior to his death from cancer, Sam was employed by Procter and Gamble in Greensboro. Sam was an accomplished house painter whose talents were highly sought after. He loved to fish and have fun and is sorely missed by all who knew him, especially by his family.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
