Charlie was born 2 miles east of Axton, Virginia, and was a farmer. He was a well known chimney builder. Many of the chimneys he built are still standing today. He was also a carpenter and built his own house which also still stands. Charlie and Mattie lived at Uncle Jim's (James Thomas Holland) while they were building their own home. Stella and Percy were born there and it is said that Charlie was spending the night there the night he died. He could play the piano a little and could play a fiddle quite well. One of his favorite tunes was "Darling Nellie Gray." The only child that was given a middle name was Nellie Gray. The other children chose a middle name later in life.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
