Mr. D. E. Marshall, age 73, whose home is on Cleveland Street, died suddenly on Friday evening a few hours after being stricken at his work. Mr. Marshalls' death was a great surprise to all who knew him. Stricken at his work in the afternoon, he was brought to his home, and was thought to be recovering from the attack when he expired suddenly at about half past ten in the evening.
Dock Early Marshall was one of nine children born to John W. Marshall and Ann Donnovant. His birth took place on Sept. 18th, 1853, near Horsepasture and had he lived until the fall of this year he would have been 73 years of age. Mr. Marshall lived with his parents near Horsepasture until he had reached his majority, when he moved to Martinsville. Here, on December 18th, 1878, he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Nunn who survives him.
To this union the following children were born: Mrs. W. F. Hart of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. W. B. Kent of Saltville, Va.; Mrs. B. N. Davis of Roanoke; O. W. Marshall of Colorado; Miss Sarah Brown (Marshall) of Richmond; and Miss Hilda (Marshall) of this city. All of the above mentioned are still living. Besides these, Mr. Marshall leaves to mourn his loss seven grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: J. T. and B. L. Marshall of Martinsville; Mrs. J. W. Doyle of Ridgeway; Mrs. J. H. Ashworth, Mrs. John Hill, both of Martinsville, and Miss Annie Marshall of Hot Springs. Mrs. Geo. Hill, sister, and Mr. J. W. and T. T. Marshall, brothers, preceded him in death.
The deceased at the time of his death was a member of the Methodist Church, a loyal member of the Pythian Lodge here, and also a member of Rajah Temple D. O. K. K., Roanoke.
His funeral took place from his home on Cleveland Ave., Sunday, April 11th, followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Sarah J. Marshall, 78, widow of the late D. E. Marshall of Martinsville, passed away Tuesday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. W. B. Kent at Saltville following a lingering illness. Death was attributed to a complication of diseases. She had been in declining health for the past year or more. The remains were brought to her home on Cleveland avenue here where funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. Burial followed in the family burial plot in Oakwood Cemetery.
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. W. B. Kent, Saltville; Mrs. B. M. Davis, Roanoke; Mrs. B. M. Hart, Chicago; O. W. Marshall, Oak Creek, Colo.; and Miss Hilda Marshall, this city. The brothers and sisters surviving include T. M. Nunn, Winston-Salem; John W. Nunn, Danville; Mesdames C. H. Holland, Axton; W. H. Atkins, Roanoke; and B. L. Marshall, this city.
Her husband preceded her to the grave about seven years ago. The deceased was a life long resident of Henry County, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Wesley Nunn. Among the out-of-town relatives and friends attending the final rites were: Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Kent and three children of Saltville; Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Davis and children of Roanoke; Miss Sara Brown of Richmond; Mrs. R. L. Hutchins of Winston-Salem; Mr. and Mrs. John Nunn of Danville; Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Holland of Axton; Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Marshall of Spencer; John Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Smith, Mrs. Hulda Hartsook, Miss Anne Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Atkins and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Nunn, all of Roanoke and T. M.
