!RELATIONSHIP: individual known from June Bork's genealogy of
the Burnett family. (Info from Boris N. Bulatkin, February 1990.)

!From research of Margaret I. Hawk, 3129 Ellenwood Drive,
Fairfax, Virginia 22031, 1993:

!James Tuttle (Sr.) was born about 1738 in New York, and perhaps
died in 1811 in Giles County, Tennessee. He was married about 1758 to Rebecca
WASHBURN, possibly in Ulster county, New York, no record of the marriage
known. They sold property in Ulster County i 1772, then trekked down the
Great Wagon Road in the Shenandoha Valley of Virginia to the vicinity of the New
River, where they bought 400 acres in that part of Montgomery County which is
now Wyeth County, on a branch of the New River. By 1785 they sold their
land in Virginia. By 1785 the family was in Wilkes County (now Elbert
Co.) Georgia, and in August 1787 they sold their land in Virginia. During the
approximately ten years they lived in Elbert County, they owned several pieces
of land, all in the vicinity of Elberton. About 1795 they moved on to Jackson
County, GA, where James and his sons all bought property.

!Between 1805 and 1810 the family split up, at least two sons
(Nicholas and James) and one daughter (Rebecca) going to Kentucky, and the two
others (Solomon and David) to Maury/Giles County are in Middle
Tennessee. It is believed James, Sr. also went to TN, and that he died there in
1811. This belief is based on three deeds of gifts, all dated 11 May 1811,
proven 20 May 1811 and registered 18 July 1811, in Giles County (Deed Book A,
pp 159-163). In these, James Tuttle Sr. conveyed, upon his death, a slave,
horses, livestock, and household items to "my son David Tuttle of Maury
County", "my daughter Mary Tuttle", an "my grandson Ichabod Tuttle". No land
holdings are known in the area, although James B. Tuttle appeared as witness
to a deed in Maury County in 1806 (Book A, p. 30). Absolute proof that this
James is the same one who was in Georgia still is lacking, but the likelihood
is too strong to ignore.

!Nothing is known of Rebecca WASHBURN, and in fact the source of
the information as to her maiden name also is uncertain. However, it
appears her name was known to numerous descendants, and is cited in earlier
research papers, such as "Tuttle-Tuthill Lines in America", by Dr. Alva M.
Tuttle (1968), and "Solomon Tuttle of Old Mt. Comfort, and His
Descendants" by Julia S. Reed (1961). The information probably was passed down through
thegenerations, and Washburn was given as a middle name to several
grandsons. Some sources have said that her father's given name was Nicholas,
but this is not yet known to be confirmed. Rebecca probably was born about
1740, and quite possibly she died in Georgia before the family moved on to
Kentucky and TN.

!There were undoubtedly children other than those listed here,
especially daughters, but they have not been identified to date. The status
of the Mary Tuttle mentioned above, is still inconclusive, so she is not
included here as a child of this family. She may actually have been an unmarried
daughter, of course, but more likely she was a widowed daughter-in-law,
perhaps of Isaac, or even of another unknown son. Ichabod served in the War of
1812, and was on the Maury County tax list in 1816, so it may be presumed he was
born abt 1790-95, possibly the son of Mary, or of Isaac W. He is last
found in 1817 on a list for road work in Giles County.
