Notes for Alice BEZAKER
(1) MARRIAGE: St. Augustine the Less Parish Register, Gloucester, England
It is yet to be determined if this marriage is for the Gyles who lived
at Wheatenhurst a short time later. If it is, then children 2-7 were
probably born to this wife, particularly as child # 2 is named Alice.
Notes for Gyles (Spouse 1)
(1) CHRISTENING : Sandhurst Parish Register, Gloucester, England, FHL# 991289
(2) Alumni Oxoniensis: Gyles matriculated at Oxford 17 Jun 1587 from Willington Court, Gloucester.
(3) MARRIAGE: Much Cowarne Parish Register, Much Cowarne, Hereford, England FHL# 1040324-10; extraction batch # M137901
(4) Christenings of children: Wheatenhurst BT's, Wheatenhurst, Gloucester, England FHL# 427804-2. He is listed here as yeoman and served as parish church warden. There were probably at least 6 children born prior to this.
(5) MARRIAGE: Parish of St. Philip and St. Jacob in Bristol to Alice Bezaker? If so, children 2-7 are hers, not Penelope's.
(6) DEATH and BURIAL: Sandhurst Parish Register, FHL# 991289 age 85, listed as gent. He appears to have returned to Sandhurst in 1615 and assumed the title of property of Willington Court at the death of his mother.
(7) information obtained from internet 4 Aug 1998:
There is a Gyles Winston who appears for a time at Wheatenhurst near Bristol, who may be this Gyles. A (second?) marriage for his appears in the St. Philip and St. Jacob Church in Bristol on 12 Apr 1613 to Alice Bezaker. He served as church warden at Wheatenhurst and was called a yeoman. E.G.F. Rutledge in his handwritten compilation "Winstoneana, 1559-1802" [FHL # 1363778 item 13, pg. 115] gives an interesting insight that may explain what Gyles was doing during this time. Husbandmen were usually younger sons and sons of younger sons actually working on the land of their parents. A yeoman assumed the supervision of an estate and lending a hand at harvest time and was usually paid in land or produce, but may have been a wage-earner. A gent. was the senior line of a county family and served as a yeoman prior to retirement to a messuage, when he assumed the higher status and title. Gyles was styled a "gent." when he returned to Willington Court.
