United States Supreme Court Associate Justice, US Congressman. Born in Gordonsville, Virginia, he was admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced to practice law in Bardstown, Kentucky. In 1801, he returned to Virginia, resumed to practice law and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1812-14). In 1814, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress and to next four Congresses serving until 1825. Not a candidate for renomination, he was appointed a judge of the general court of Virginia, serving until he resigned in 1827. In 1827, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth and Twenty-first Congresses, serving until his resignation 1830. President Andrew Jackson appointed him an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1836, and he served until his death in Washington, D.C.
