Notes for Artimesa HURT
Artimesa was the daughter of Joel Hurt (1779- aft 1850) and Nancy (Smith) Hurt. Joel was the son of William Hurt (1743-1811) and Sarah Hurt (1748-1789) of Madison Co. VA. After marrying James William Weakley on 13 May 1842 in Madison County, VA. Artimesa and her husband settled on the western side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Page County, southeast of the town of Stanley. Here they had eleven children, their first-born being Ausmus Weakley (named after her brother Ausmus Hurt). Husband James William Weakley died in 1867 according to the Page County records and was buried on his land at the end of Pine Grove Hollow, VA. Artimesa then moved to Illinois in this post Civil War time frame (Fall of 1870) and settled in the Prentice, IL area. Two of the children stayed in VA (David Clinton Weakley and Edna Rilla Weakley), son Wyatt B. Weakley (children were Stella & James + five more) went to PA, and the 8 others moved with their mom to various counties in central IL. At the age of 81, she passed away in Illinois and is buried in the plot of her son, James B. Weakley at the Yatesville Cemetery. The Yatesville Cemetery records her name as: Artie Missie (sic) Weakley.

Notes for James B. (Spouse 1)
James William Weakley was the fourth child (of eight) born in Weakley Hollow to William F. Weakley (c1793-1858) and Lucy Sisk (the second wife of William F. Weakley)(c1793-1849). Two children were already in the family by William's marriage to his first wife, Nancy Bradley. James William Weakley married Artimesa Hurt on May 12, 1842 in Madison County, VA. After their marriage they moved to Page County VA at the far end of Pine Grove Hollow, southeast of the town of Stanley, VA. Eleven children were born of this union in VA (all survived infancy.) To cope with the growing family, James W. and Artemisa purchased a 195-acre tract of farmland in 1859. The two oldest boys, Ausmus and Wyatt B., fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. When the youngest of these children was but three years old, James William Weakley died (1867). He was buried on the edge of his land in Pine Grove Hollow, VA. Attempts to locate this exact spot have been futile. In the Fall of 1870, his wife and eight of their children moved to various counties in central Illinois. Two children stayed in VA and one moved to PA. His pioneering wife Artimesa lived an additional 32 years in Illinois and is buried there in Morgan County. (edit note 2023) - Family letters now indicate that the Weakley family came to America from Devonshire England, circa 1719.
