ABINGDON, Va. Wyndham R. "John" Woodward, age 83, of the Mendota Road community, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Valley Healthcare Center. He was born Aug. 20, 1929, in Washington County, Va., a son of the late Charlie and Lucy Brummitt Woodward. He had lived in the area his entire life and was a graduate of Greendale High School. John loved the outdoors. He was an avid coon hunter and enjoyed collecting arrowheads. He was a member of Rich Valley United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Lorene Woodward; brothers, Joe, Sam and Robert Woodward; and sisters, Ruby Woodward, Francis Poole and Pearl Smith. Survivors include his daughters, Lisa Stanley and husband, Hamilton, Jeanne Dixon and husband, Mike, Karen Hall and husband, Mike, all of Abingdon, and Susan Winton and husband, Lance, of Bradenton, Fla.; grandsons, Brandon and Bryan Stanley, Cody Dixon and Hunter Holley; granddaughter, Kristen Dixon; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of Valley Healthcare Center and Hospice of Southwest Virginia for the care and compassion shown to their loved one. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry Linkous officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with his nephews serving as pallbearers. His grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may also call anytime at the residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the funeral home to assist with expenses.
