Charles Edward "Bus" Hughes, 84, son of David and Margie Belle Brewer Hughes, was born May 12, 1920, in Kansas City. He died March 12, 2005, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Hughes was a deacon emeritus of the First Baptist Church of Raytown, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, usher/greeter, worked annually on the construction of the Christmas pageant and did weekly hospital visitation.
He was a lifetime member of the board of governors of the Baptist Medical Center of Kansas City and was an active member of the Independence Patriots chapter of the American Revolution.
Before retiring, he was a 31-year employee of General Motors. He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and a granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Lorene Grogan Hughes; two sons, Edward Ray Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ronald Dean Hughes of Lee's Summit; one daughter, Linda Kay Waide of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Virginia Dennis of Kansas City and Doris Marie Kellerman of Houston; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were March 16 at the First Baptist Church of Raytown with the Rev. Paul Brooks and the Rev. Charles Funderburk officiating. Burial was in the Forrest Hill Cemetery at Kansas City under the direction of Floral Hills Chapel of Raytown.
