Notes for John Robert RYAN
RYAN: Irish: simplified form of Mulryan. Irish: reduced form of O’Ryan, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Riagháin (modern Irish Ó Riain) ‘descendant of Rian’; Ó Maoilriain ‘descendant of Maoilriaghain’, or Ó Ruaidhín ‘descendant of the little red one’. Ryan is one of the commonest surnames in Ireland; there has been considerable confusion with Regan. KaM Americanized spelling of German Rein. John Ryan was born about 1733 at Goochland, Virginia to Philip Ryan and Sarah Whitehead. He married Unity Toney at Goochland Virginia abt 1751. John Ryan Senior to 1768

Amherst County Records: page 128, Surveys 1763: 15 Oct 1763, John Ryan, 60 acres.

Albermarle County Deeds: Page 408, 17 Jan 1764 John Ryan had property on Mechums River (Meecham) adjacent David Glen and Sharod Miller. The Mechums River rises in northern Nelson County and flows for the remainder of its course in northwestern Albemarle County. It flows generally northeastwardly and joins the Moormans River to form the South Fork of the Rivanna River about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Charlottesville. As will be noted below this river shares the same county as the Tye River and Rockfish and Cub Creek in Northern Nelson County.

Amherst County Deeds: Page 86, Page 315: 14 Feb 1765, John Ryan sells to John Patrick of Augusta County, 425 acres in Albermarle and Amherst, Rockfish and Mechum Rivers. Part of tract pat. to John Chiswell, conveyed to John Robinson and by him to John Ryan.

John Ryan is witness on a number of deeds and wills 1767 thru 1769.

Amherst County Records: Page 127: 7 Apr 1770: John Ryan takes out a debt to Kippens & Co., 5sh for Land on Tye at the mouth of Cub Creek. Lines: Col John Rose, George Monroe and William Moore. Bought from Col. John Simms, Hanover, also two slaves, Hanry, a fellow about 22 and Daniel a boy about six. Debt. due 1 Jun 1771. Witt: Reuben Jordan, John Digge, John Old and Clough Shelton. Tye River at the mouth of Cub Creek is now in Nelson County, Virginia and they connect at about Hwy 56 and 680. Witnesses on this document include John Digge who is a relative of Francis Edgar who married William B. Ryan. It is interesting to note that relationships like this continue through migrations to other areas like Kentucky. This is another reason why I believe that John Ryan is an ancestor of William B. Ryan.

Page 146, 31 Mar 1773. John Ryan, Planter, AC, to Moses Hughes, AC, for L100, 327 acres on Tye. Unity, wife of Ryan.

In 1778 we find John Ryan owning land on Raccoon Creek (see above). Page 177: 5 Oct 1778. Matt. Nightingale & Wife Lucy, AC, to Nichl. Wren, AC, for L135, 150 acres Coffey's (otherwise RACON) Creek. Lines: John Ryan. Nightingale bought it of Joseph Eaton and rec. in AC. Release of mtg. to Carter & Trent by Thos. Staples, factor, 5 Oct 1778.

This seems to be the same place Whitehead Ryan owned property according to the following transactions:

Page 399, Page 576. 19 Oct 1802. Jos. Shelton & Wm. H. Diggs, AC, to Jno. Alford, AC, - Philip Ryan owed Jno. Alford and about 6 Jun 1801, made Deed of Trust to grantors above on 200 acres and where Ryan then lived. Lines: Col Jno Rose, David Clarkson, Leroy Dangerfield. Sold Monday, 1 Mar at ACH - opposite tavern door (then occupied by Reuben Bates) - Jno. Alford bought tract for $261.00.

Not much of the math in these transactions comes out even close to what probably happened. John Senior seems to have bought 724 acres and sold 745 acres. This would indicate that he had land that was not recorded in the books of Albermarle and Amherst Counties.

John Ryan Junior seems to have sold 327 acres and received half of 400 acres with his brother Philip Ryan.573
