Notes for Demetrios “James” George HARAKAS
Demetrios Georgios Harakas was married to Myrtle Ryan, on 1908 in Exeter, Missouri. Demetrios was the biological Father of George, Sophia, Andrew and Stamatia (aka "Stella") Harakas. All of Demetrios children, according to Greek naming traditions of the period in which they were born, would have a middle name which was the equivalent of their biological Father's given name. In this case, it would have been the Americanized version of the Greek given name of "Demetrios", that is James. Hence, George James Harakas, Sophia James Harakas, and so forth.

Demetrios married Myrtle May McClanahan (in some records reported to be "Myrtle Ryan") on February 29, 1808 in Exeter Townhip, Barry County, Missouri. The name of her Father--"I. N. McClanahan"--is found listed on the marriage license of Myrtle and Demetrios as the person who gave LEGAL consent to the marriage (Myrtle was 17 at the time of the wedding.). I believe, at this point, that Isaac Newton McClanahan was the biological Father of Myrtle for several reasons.

The first is that Myrtle's Brother, Cleo Wilson Ryan, is found living with Elizabeth, his Mother, along with Elizabeth's SECOND Husband, Charles Euliss, in the 1900 U.S. Census. Myrtle is not. Instead, she is living in Missouri with Isaac McClanahan and his Wife, Nancy Jane, which I believe is Myrtle's step-Mother. The number "0" is stricken and replaced with a "1" as far as Nancy's number of children that are living. In the 1910 Census (Lawrence County, MO.), Nancy states that she has had NO children. Likewise, in a much later legally executed document on September 9, 1966--that of Demetrios' and Myrtle's Daughter, Stamatia (aka "Stella") application of a delayed birth certificate--Myrtle's birth name is listed as "Myrtle McClanahan". The surname of "Ryan" does not appear, at all, in these two instances.

Demetrios' given birth name is also found in the delayed birth certificate of his Daughter, Stamatia and specifically listed in her baptismal record in the Greek community of Atlanta, Georgia (filed on June 4, 1916). Demetrios started using the given name of "James" as early as the year of 1910 (U.S. Census record).

Myrtle, sometime after the death of their Son, Andrew James Harakas, in 1918 in Washington, D.C., ended up leaving the area of Washington, D.C., divorcing James, and remarrying. Myrtle and James had lived in at least two other states, that is, Missouri and South Carolina prior to their residency in the District of Columbia.
It is not known, at this point, just why James ended up as a resident of Saint Elizabeth's Hospital and dying at the institution.

Andrew James Harakas, the infant Son of James and Myrtle, is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the District of Columbia. The other children of James and Myrtle are buried in the state of Washington.
