Notes for Henry SHOCK
GERMAN EMIGRANT ANCESTOR for the SHOCK lineage from Germany in 1743 as a 1 year old infant with his father Jacob and his mother? on board the ship “Robert and Alice” to the United States.

——————————————

Henry Shock came to America with his parents ca 1743. It is stated that they came from Rotterdam, but we believe this was the port of deportation. Several sources have indicated that they came from Germany. They landed in Germantown, Pa., a northern suburb of Philadelphia. We think he was about 2 years old when he landed in Ameirca.508

Henry was born in Germany in 1742 and came to the United States in 1743 with his father Jacob. Henry’s family came to the United States on the “Robert and Alice”. Henry is listed as a taxpayer in Shenandoah Co, VA in 1783. In 1793 he is listed for jury duty in Greenbrier Co, VA. Henry patented 300 acres of land in Greenbrier Co, VA on August 15, 1796 and in 1798 he was appointed as a surveyor of a road.531

HENRY SHOCK (1742 – 1818)

Much uncertainty surrounds Henry Shock’s parents. Since very little original source material exists we are left to selecting the most logical heritage from other family trees, and some are quite incomplete, or obviously inconsistent, or just plain wrong. One source shows Henry (age 1) coming to America in 1743 with his parents. This is the heritage used in this tree, not that it is verifiable, but that other trees have different parents, some born in Pennsylvania, that do not match with later known generations.

Henry Shock was born in Hessin, Germany (near Frankfort) in 1742 and was brought to America by his parents in 1743. He died 7 Feb 1818 in Twistville, Braxton County, (West) Virginia. He was apparently the only child of Jacob Shock (1720-1781) and an unknown mother. This family is considered the “first settlers” of this branch of the early Shock’s in America.

Henry and his parents settled in Pennsylvania, and in 1768 at age 26 he married Sarah Elizabeth Holtzapfel (also spelled Holtsopple) in York County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was born 5 Apr 1751 in York County, Pennsylvania to parents Erasmus (1710 - ) and Christina (Ruscher) Holtzoppel (1718 - ). Shortly after their marriage Henry and Elizabeth removed to Shenandoah County in Virginia where Henry was a blacksmith, remaining there throughout the Revolutionary War years until about 1789. A 1783 census of Virginia shows them in this location, and at that time they had four children:

John T. Shock (1771-1854) Sarah Shock (1775- ) Christina Shock (1777- ) Elizabeth Shock (1778- )

From 1789 to about 1811, Henry and Elizabeth are recorded as living in Loudoun, Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia where he purchased 300 acres in 1796. By the 1810 census their other six children had been born:

Henry Shock (1785- ) Jacob Shock (1789- ) Rayner Shock (1791- Christian Shock (1793- Sally Shock (1795- ) Regina Shock (1800-)

The method of census-taking in 1800 thru 1840 did not list family members by name as has been the practice for 1850 and on. For example, the 1810 census was structured to count the number of “souls” living in a household, grouped by their general ages and sex. Henry was named as the head of household and one of seven free white persons in the tally. In addition to Henry, there were 3 males and 3 females counted. Based on this scant information an assumption can be made that the older children had married or moved away, but identifying which children remained is not possible. The census also showed two other categories of residents. First, “Other free persons except Indians not tamed”, and second, “Slaves”. Henry’s household contained neither of these, but at least the census acknowledged them as having a soul.

In 1811 they moved again, with their son Jacob, settling in Twistville on the Elk River in what is now Braxton County, W. Va. where Henry died 7 Feb 1818, age 76. Elizabeth is recorded to have died that same year in Rosedale, Gilmer County, W. Va., but no original sources have been found to confirm this.

Finally, there is a record of a will in the York County Pennsylvania Wills of 1749-1819 where a Henry Shock, son-in-law of Erasmus Holsable, is recorded. Erasmus is shown as one of the executors, and the text identifies Henry’s wife, Elisabeth, and some of their children, but also names other children not recognized. Further research is necessary to reconcile this.

Henry was the 5th great-grandfather of Sherry McDonald. He was born during the reign of King George II when the population of the Colonies was about 50,400. After the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) he lived to see the first four Presidents elected, and the invention of the steam engine, the cotton gin, and the electric battery. At his death, the Louisiana Purchase was completed, Congress had banned importation of slaves, and the population exceeded four million.
