In the fall of 1783 or the following year, at least 3 Mathews brothers left their home in Shenandoah County, Virginia to move to Eastern Tennessee. Legend has it that before they left they changed the spelling of their name by dropping the "w", in order that their descendants might know each other. It is interesting to note that their father, Alexander Mathews Sr, used the "w" on a 1749 land grant but the "w" was missing on his 1783 will.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
