Born on Great Rocky Run (a tributary of Occuquan), then in Prince William County [present-day Fairfax County], Virginia, to Henry Netherton and Sarah Rhodes, who removed to Shenandoah County, Virginia and settled on what became known as Netherton's Mill Run.
Married James Mathes in Augusta County, Virginia, August 12, 1758.
Her paternal grandparents were Henry Netherton (d. 1716), gentleman, gunsmith and surveyor of Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia and his wife Sarah Tucker, who remarried William Veale in 1717. Her maternal grandparents were John Rhodes (d. Nov. 12, 1748) of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia and his wife Ann (alive 1759), who remarried Robert Fristoe on Feb. 23, 1752 in Overwharton Parish.
Great-granddaughter Henry Netherton (c.1650-1705), of Bishopsgate, London, England and his first wife Sarah (c.1651-1687); and of John Tucker (c.1671-1699), merchant and constable of Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia.
The funerary monument of her aunt Elizabeth Netherton Walker (c.1708-1737) survives to this day in St Paul's Episcopal Churchyard in King George County, Virginia.
