Notes for James Leonidas MITCHELL
J. L. MITCHELL, CONFEDERATE VETERAN, DIES AT AGE OF 93
J. Lon Mitchell, one of the few surviving Confederate veterans in this part of the state, passed away late Sunday night at the home of a son, Tom Mitchell, at Morris, Okla. He was the father of Mrs. C. P. Scrivener of Bolivar and had spent most of the summer in the Scrivener home, going from here to Muskogee, Okla., where he had made his home in recent years with a daughter, Mrs. Eula Reddick. When Mrs. Reddick went to Texas to visit a daughter he had gone to Morris to visit his son Tom.
Sunday night, about 7:30 o'clock, he was on his way to Methodist church services in Morris. Half a block from his son's home he stepped in the path of an automobile. The driver was unable to warn him, as Mr. Mitchell was very hard of hearing. He died about five hours later.
Though lacking only three weeks of reaching his 93rd birthday, Mr. Mitchell had enjoyed good health and the retention of his faculties except his hearing. He was born in Camden county, Missouri, October 26, 1842, and came with his parents to Polk county at the age of 7. Most of his life was spent in the Brighton community. He had spent his later years in visiting his children.
The five children who survive are Mrs. C. P. Scrivener of Bolivar, Mrs. Eula Reddick of Muskogee, Okla., Tom Mitchell of Morris, Okla., Joe Mitchell o f Nezperce, Idaho. and Mrs. Minnie Garrison of Lebanon, Mo. All attended the funeral except Joe Mitchell, who was too far away to return for the services. A number o f nieces and nephews also came for the final rites.
The funeral was held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon a t the Methodist church in Brighton, preached by the Rev. W. H. Winton of Morrisville, a cousin of Mr. Mitchell. Burial was in the Brighton cemetery.
