Notes for Andrew HOBSON
Andrew Hobson was the son of George Hobson III (born in VA and died in NC). He married first Ruth Cox (#22561804) born 1795 in North Carolina and died 1853 in Iowa. Then Sarah Cordelia McCracken Lytaker 1821-1886. See image for the newspaper account of his death. Though we have yet to locate his exact burial location, it is likely he is in Blakeway Cemetery as he lived in Danville, and his first wife Ruth and son Elijah are buried in the same cemetery. Andrew and Ruth had several children together.
1. Zimri Hobson 1820-1889 (#37624128)
2. George J born about 1820 and died sometime after 1880 census. George would fit the right age for Andrew and Ruth's Children in the 1830 census. He must have moved out of his father's house before 1840 as he doesn't fit the ages. There is a George Hobson living in Danville, Iowa in the 1850 census, but is found later found in Benton County, Indiana for 1860, 1870, and 1880 census'. Among other sons and daughters, this George had sons named James, Zimri, Andrew, and George, which are names of his brothers. It is very likely that this is the correct George. George J is mentioned in his father's will written in 1868 before Andrew's death in 1874. I have yet to find any further records on this George J Hobson that include a date and location of death.
3. John Carey 1821-1882 (#100520000). John fits his father's census counts for 1830 and 1840. He is in Indiana in the 1850 census and got married in Indiana in 1853. Census records place him in Indiana for 1860 and 1870. Records indicate that he enlisted in the Civil War in Indiana in August 1862, and discharged in 1865. His wife Nancy is listed as a surviving widow in Jefferson, Missouri in 1890.
4. Andrew M. 1823-1844 (#58056278) - Accounted for by age on the 1830 and 1840 census for Andrew Hobson.
5. James Riley abt 1825- about 1857 - James' father Andrew mentions him in his will: "to the heirs of my son James R. Hobson deceased..." A James Riley Hobson married a Mahala Casteel in Henry County, Iowa in 1849. James and Mahala live in Danville, Iowa according to the 1850 Census. In the 1856 Iowa State Census, JR and MJ Hobson are living in Henry County Iowa with two children. By 1860, Mahala has remarried and living in Missouri. I have no record indicating date or location for James Riley Hobson's death except his father's 1868 will indicating he is deceased, his last child was born in March of 1856, and that his wife remarried by 1860.
6. Melinda 1826-1909. Melinda marries Justin Melcher before 1860 and resides in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa until her death. She is in her father's will.
7. J William - born about 1833. He matches age of one of the males in father's 1840 census. In 1850 and 1860 census' he is living with parents in Henry County, Iowa. He is found in 1856 in Henry County, Iowa census. I have no other records for him. Likely to have died in the Civil War.
8. Nathaniel Wesley - 1839-1923. Nathan married his step-mother's daughter Nancy Houchen Lytaker. They lived in both Henry and Des Moines Counties in Iowa (adjacent counties) until his death.
9. Ruth -- I have found no records for her, though family lore says she existed. Lore says she was born in the 1830's in Tippecanoe, Indiana. IF she existed, she would have had to have been born and died between the 1830 and 1840 census'.
After his wife Ruth died, he married Sarah McCracken Lytaker (#194823900 )who had a daughter Nancy Houchen Lytaker from her first husband Peter Lytaker. Andrew and Sarah had at least two children together. Some have said they had a daughter Eliza, but this appears to be a misinterpretation of Elijah's name on the 1860 census. Mary Naomi's parents could be Andrew and Sarah, OR Nathaniel Wesley Hobson and Nancy Houchen Lytaker. They lived in the same household and both women were of childbearing age. I have yet to find definitive records for who her parents really are. She died at age 33 in Iowa, having married Patrick Costello

11. Benjamin Elmore 1863-1926 - sometimes called Barnabas. Named in his father's will. Based on age, he may have been the son with him when he died suddenly (see attached article). He married Mahala Cordelia Huffstedler in Illinois in 1882. Per census records, they lived in Kansas from at least 1895 until 1905. Then records place them in Missouri for the 1910 and 1920 census'.
