HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY.John Sheley and family, who were friends and near neighbors of George Washington, came here from Virginia, in 1807, and settled on land one-half mile south of town. His descendants are yet living in this vicinity. Mr. Sheley and his wife, besides possessing amiable dispositions, undoubtedly were favored with strong constitutions-we are informed that they lived to the ripe old age of nearly one hundred years.

Edward Stoker being commited to the Goal of this County by virtue of a receipt under the hand of John Hardin, Gent. one of his Majesties Justices of the Peace for this County for feloniously stealing two mares one of these the property of Thomas Balch of the sd County the other belonging to a person unknown. And the Evidences for Our Sovereign Lord the King Viz. Thomas Balch, John Connell, Robert Thorn, John Sheely, Elizabeth Martin and Joseph Hill were sworn and examined and on consideration of the Evidences and circumstances, it is the opinion of this Court that the sd Edward Stoker is guilty of the Felony with which he stands charged and ought to be tryed for the same at the General Court and in order thereto he is remanded to the Goal of this County to be removed thence to the Publick Goal at Williamsburg according to law and it is ordered that the depositions and all papers relating to the sd fact be returned to the Secretary's office.
He was a witness to the will of Frederick Beeler on 5 Feb 1764 in Frederick County, Virginia.(6) He resided on 16 Mar 1768 in Frederick County, Virginia.(7) He leased two tracts containing 100 acres and 75 acres from his father-in-law, William Davis, located on a Branch of the Shenandoah River called Evats Run. The release transferring ownership was written 17 March 1768. Both documents were recorded 2 Aug 1768. He is referenced in the will of Michael Sheely on 5 Oct 1784 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. (8) He resided in 1806 in Jefferson County, West Virginia. He moved to Silvercreek Township, Greene County, Ohio in 1810. He died in 1820 in Greene County, Ohio. He was buried in Sheley Cemetery, Silvercreek Township, Greene County, Ohio.(9) There is some belief that John, Sr. did not serve in the Revolutionary War, but rather his son, John, Jr. who died in Kentucky in 1825.
He was married to Margaret Davis (daughter of William Davis and Ann Beeler) about 1756. John Sheley and Margaret Davis had eleven children:
