Hugh Forster
Hugh F. "Foot" Foster, 95, Parsons, died at 2:50 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at his home. He had been in failing health.
He was born June 8, 1913, at Sherman City, to Benjamin H. and Frey (Fehrenbach) Foster. He spent his early life in Sherman City and graduated from the McCune High School in 1931.
He served both in World War II and again in the Korean War with the 930th Ordnance Company from Parsons.
In his early adult life he was employed by the Coca Cola Co. in Parsons. After World War II he began employment with the Ankortite Company, later named Dayton-Superior. At Ankortite he started in the shipping department, later was factory supervisor and finally personnel supervisor, retiring after 32 years of service. Also, during these years he worked part time at Greenfeather's Service Station which was owned by his friend Tom Greenfeather.
In 1981, after retiring from full time employment he began working part time at the Burris-Carson-Wall Funeral Home and continued in that capacity until he was well past 90 years old. Also during this time he worked part time at the Nichols Clothing Store and then at the Lambert-Duffy-Melone store.
He was long an active member of the Brown-Bishop Post # 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars and had served as commander and held other offices. For over 20 years he worked the bingo events at the post. He also was a past commander of the American Legion in Parsons.
For five years he operated the Kiwanis train at Forest Park in Parsons. When his sons were in school he helped manage a band that they and several friends were in.
Hugh joined the Catholic church in 1951 while on ship during the Korean War and for many years was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and later St. Patrick's Church. He often served as an usher at church. In later years he attended the First Assembly of God Church and became a member of that church.
On May 13, 1939 he and Edna Marie Westhoff were married in South Mound. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1977.
He married Hazel G. (Hudkins) Root on September 8, 1979 in Parsons.
SURVIVORS - Wife - Hazel Foster of the home Two sons - Jeffrey H. Foster Chanute Terry J. Foster Springfield, Oregon A step-daughter - Renee Brumley Ozark, Arkansas Six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren A half-brother - Don Foster Parsons Preceding him in death were two brothers - Lynn Foster and Ross Foster; a sister - Neva Bray; two half-brothers and two half-sisters.
FUNERAL SERVICES - will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the First Assembly of God Church in Parsons, with Rev. John Chastain officiating. The burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday at the Fort Scott National Cemetery, with military honors. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday. Memorials are suggested to the First Assembly of God Church or to Hospice Care of Kansas.
