A traffic accident here early Sunday resulted In the death of an Ava teen-ager and left two other companions Injured. Apparently killed instantly was Royal Grant Strong, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Strong of Route 5, Ava. State Trooper Bill Davis of Ava said young Strong was hurled from an open-top convertible into a tree with a terrifying impact, crushing one side of his body causing apparent instant death. Driver of the vehicle, Gary Lee Nokes, 19, Route 3, Ava, and another passenger, Ricky Dean Welch, 15, Squires, were also thrown from the car and knocked unconscious. They were treated for contusions and abrasions of the body. Trooper Davis said Nokes was driving at a high rate of speed on a county road 310 of a mile south of the Highway 5-76 junction, lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road and struck a tree, throwing all occupants out of the car. The car bounced off a tree and then hit a parked 1967 Ford pickup owned by David Wayne Medlock, 22, Route 5. Trooper Davis said the Welch youth was thrown across a fence into a pasture owned by Hubert Welton, and the Nokes boy was thrown down the road into a ditch. "I had arrested the Nokes youth at 3:50 p.m. Saturday for improper exhaust and talked with him concerning an alleged disturbance and careless driving on Friday night, the trooper said. T told young Nokes to leave town and get his car repaired before returning, he added. Later Saturday night Nokes had obtained some beer from another subject and came back to town," Davis said. Charged with supplying liquor to a minor was Melvin Boyer, 21, Route 2, Ava. Boyer entered a plea of not guilty and took a change of venue to circuit court, the trooper said.
