ELIZABETH JANE SHANNON 1846-1932

Elizabeth Jane (Hurt) Shannon was born June 6, 1846 at Nashville, Tenn., and passed away at her home rear Jingo, Kas., Tuesday morning, August 16, after a long illness at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 10 days.

"Aunt Betty" as she was lovingly called, came to Missouri while quite. young with her parents and settled near El Dorado Springs. Soon afterwards her mother passed away and her father was later killed in action on the battlefield at Springfield Mo.

After the death of her father she came with her sister to the Asbury neighborhood west of Drexel in Miami county, Kansas.

She was married to T. L. Shannon on February 4, 1866 and they were early pioneers in this vicinity who helped build up our community. M r. Shannon died September 9, 1923.

Early in life Aunt Betty professed her faith in Christ and united with the United Brethren church at New Lancaster. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lucy Stone, of Loraine, Oregon and a number of nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. P. Reed, pastor of the Drexel Presbyterian church and J. B. Hays, funeral director. Appropriate music was furnished by a mixed quartet, Mrs. Clarence Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. John Rhea and.Mr. Cyrus Rhea. Pall bearers were, Dale and Lester Black, Guy and Donald Long, Pete Jackson and Harry Englis. Burial was made in the Rockville cemetry.

Ira and Johnnie Hurt of El Dorado Springs, Mo., F. M. Davidson, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hamilton and Mrs. G. G. Davidson of Amoret, Mo., W. J. Carpenter of Paola, Kas., and a number from La Cygne, Kas., were in attendance at the services.
