ITALIAN IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR
——————————
In her 97th year of life, Caterina passed peacefully at North York General Hospital on August 27th 2015.
His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Matthew 25:21
Beloved mother of Nino and wife Domenica and loving nonna/grandmother of Vanessa and Andrea.
Caterina was born 3 days before the end of WWI on November 8th, 1918, in Aglie, Torino, in the region of Piedmont, Italy.
Throughout her life, she was a strong, caring and independent woman. In spite of increasing health challenges over the last few years, Caterina’s Catholic faith was unwavering to the end. She continued to live in her own home as was her ardent wish until the last possible moment. A great proponent of independence, education and caritas, she generously supported her family, friends and organizations throughout her life.
Caterina is reunited with her husband, Pietro (d. 2001) whom she married almost 70 years ago, shortly after the end of WWII, on September 8th 1945. She left her birthplace Aglie with hope of better opportunities in Canada and little else in 1948 arriving at Mont Tremblant, Quebec in the cold of November, leaving one set of mountains for another with her husband Pietro to work as kitchen help and Pietro as gardener for entrepreneur Vincenzo (James) Franceschini, founder of Dufferin Construction.
Moving to Ontario in 1949, Caterina took night classes to study English, became an Avon representative and homemaker eventually residing on Pemberton Ave, in Willowdale with her husband, from 1967 and for years, cultivated expansive vegetable, fruit and flower gardens, preserving many organic and savoury fixings to share and enjoy over the winter.
The family wishes to thank caregivers, Violeta and Josephine, for their compassion for Caterina in recent years making possible her desire to live in the comfort of her own home.
We also thank Caterina’s family doctor, Dr. Warren Sinukoff, who provided her with exceptional medical care, advice and support for over 45 years. Sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the neighbours and friends on Pemberton Ave that have been like a second family to Caterina.
