Notes for Phillip Raymond "Ray" GRISWOULD
Truck-train crach kills two area men

ARLINGTON (C-SJ) - A Kiowa County rancher and his hired hand were killed when their pickup truck was struck broadside by a Missouri Pacific freight train at 7:37 a.m. Friday 8 miles west of here.

Rancher Phillip R. Griswould, 36, and John D. Rush, 18, both of the Arlington area, died instantly from massive head injuries and fractures.

Because the accident happened at a private, unmarked railroad crossing on the road which goes into the Griswould Ranch, the fatalities will not be counted on the 1974 Colorado highway toll.

Colorado State Patrol reported that the truck was pushed 3,430 feet down the track before the train could stop. The truck caught fire and Rush's body was trapped inside the wreckage. Griswould was thrown out by the impact.

Crew on the freight train included engineer Bryon O. Lay, 61, and conducter Russell T. Hatton, 61, both of Pueblo.
