Notes for Charles Henry HURT
Exactly what Henry did during the Civil War is still undetermined, documents have been found in which the details of his life and his wife’s name match, but the oral history is different, see next statement.

————————————————

Henry and Margaret Hurt were married three years before the start of the Civil War. So some of the children were born before & some after the war. They lived outside El Dorado Springs, Mo.
Henry didn't join a group to fight, but stayed home to watch out for his family and home. There were bushwackers and renegades looting and killing anyone that stood in their way. Some of them must have been after Henry, because his wife and her sister hid him out for a while in a hugh grove of trees on their place. It goes, she carried a feather bed to a big oak tree and put it high in the tree, providing him with a great hiding place. She carried food to him, taking care to go a different route each time. He was never found there. But she and her sister had many harrowing times with renegades who took advantage of the men of the homes being gone to fight in the war. Many of their chickens and livestock were killed to provide food for these roaming men. Once she recalled they slaughtered one of her calves & tore up her porch for wood to cook it. Her sister found it hard to put up with this kind of treatment and done more crying than anything else, while Margaret was a little spitfire, and would fight them off herself. They had a big apple orchard on their place and she would take apples in and polish them good; and when these men asked if they were good or poisoned, she'd tell them, "eat them and find out for yourself".
Henry died at age 56, but the rest of the family lived into their 70s. The Hurt family are buried at Martin cemetery El Dorado Springs, Mo.
This also was told to me by Roea Johnson. (from Naomi Roser's collection)30

I have had a continuing question if Sarah remarried in 1907 in Missouri, possibly Speedwell, Saint Clair Co., to a John Street who was born in 1862. Her headstone says “Sara E. Adcock”. If she were to have then there is a 1930 census which shows her mother living with them, but this is doubtful.
