Notes for David Henry JOHNSON
DALHART - David H. Johnson, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Amarillo.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Weatherly, pastor, and the Rev. Bob McAllister, pastor to senior adults, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson was born Oct. 21, 1927, in Dalhart to Lewis Clark and Leta Pearl Wadkins Johnson. He lived in Dalhart except for brief periods in Petty and Tahoka. He attended Dalhart public schools.

David worked on working ranches for four years before he volunteered for the service rather than waiting to be drafted. He was inducted in 1946 and served 16 months in Japan during the occupation.

In January 1948, he and Zola Faye McBrayer eloped to Clayton, N.M., where he made his child bride, Zola Faye, walk in six inches of snow across the state line so that he could not be accused of kidnapping. His father-in-law, Luke, told David he married her so he could finish raising her.

He continued ranch work and began farming, raising cattle and doing custom work during the next 40 years. He retired in 1990 but continued to help farmers with day work when he wasn't playing golf. Nothing made him happier than driving around the Dalhart area looking at the crops.

He was an avid golfer who shot his age several times. The most recent time was last fall about two weeks after he turned 80. He loved playing his brothers, Harrel and Ray Lee, and his golfing buddies in Dalhart. The Johnson clan tried to play together every few months. They had just played on Thursday, Aug. 21, and his team won.

He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Dalhart, where had served as a deacon for 40 years. He also served on the board of directors of Dalhart Consumer Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, D.J. and Floyd; and three sisters, Hazel, Florene and Maxine.

Survivors include his wife, Zola Faye; two daughters, Peggy Johnson McGehee of Amarillo and Nancy Clinton of Bedford; three sons, Steve and wife Sharon of Hereford, Joel and wife Pat of Arlington and Don and wife Sandy of Borger; three brothers, Harrell of Amarillo, Franklin of Azle and Ray Lee of Canyon; a sister Vinita Bevans of Dalhart; a sister-in-law, Lyndell Hall of Dalhart; many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was the proud "PaPaw" of 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Dalhart Senior Citizens Association, 610 Denrock Ave., Dalhart, TX 79022; or building fund, First Baptist Church, 1000 E. 16th St., Dalhart, TX 79022.

Notes for Zola Faye (Spouse 1)
DALHART - Zola Faye Johnson, 77, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with Joel Johnson, her son, the Rev. Rodney Weatherly, pastor, and the Rev. Bob McAllister, pastor to senior adults, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home.

Zola Faye McBrayer was born Jan. 29, 1932, to L.L. and Mildred Ricketts McBrayer. She attended school in Hereford and Hartley before marrying David Johnson on Jan. 25, 1948, in Clayton, N.M. David made Zola Faye walk across the state line in the snow so that he wouldn't be accused of kidnapping her. Her father, Luke, told David that he would have to finish raising her. The marriage everyone thought wouldn't last, lasted more than 60 years.

She worked as secretary at First Baptist Church for a number of years before working at Dalhart Federal, where she started as a secretary. She worked her way up and when she retired in 1997, she was a senior vice president.

Zola Faye was actively involved in her beloved First Baptist Church, where she taught numerous Sunday school classes and sang in the choir. She was also a member of Love Notes, a women's trio well-known and sought after in the Dalhart area.

Mrs. Johnson also served on the board of directors for the Dalhart Seniors Citizens Association and was a HOSTS volunteer in the elementary school, where she loved working with the students on their reading. She was an avid quilter until her health declined.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Betty Jean, in 2005; a granddaughter in 1971; a nephew, Jim Hall; and the love of her life, David, in September 2008.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Johnson McGehee of Amarillo and Nancy Clifton of Bedford; three sons, Steve and wife Sharon of Hereford, Joel and wife Pat of Arlington and Don and wife Sandy of Borger; a sister, Lyndell Hall of Dalhart; a sister-in-law, Vinita Bevans of Dalhart; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was the proud "Memaw" of 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Dalhart Senior Citizens Association, 610 Denrock Ave., Dalhart, TX 79022; or building fund, First Baptist Church, 1000 E. 16th St., Dalhart, TX 79022.
