Captain Joe Shely, served in Co. "F" Frontier Battalion in 1882-1884 along with his brother, Sgt. Wash Shely and stationed in Cotulla, La Salle Co., Tx Joe Shely was appointed First Lt. of Co., "F" in 1883. In 1884, Lt. was promoted to the rank of Captain.
