4. William(4) Hurt. (William(3), the elder, John(2), William(1), Senior).

He was a younger son of William(3) Hurt, the elder (d.1749) and his wife Ann Hurt. I do not know the year of his birth, but believe that he was born somewhere around 1720; probably in King William County, Va., probably in that part that became of Caroline County in 1727. I believe that William(3), the elder, was living near where Herring Creek runs into the Mattaponi River in the upper part of present day King William County and near the present town of Aylett, until after the death of his father, John(2) Hurt, in 1723. He then appears to have moved to the 400 acre tract between Polecat Creek and Reedy Swamp, south of the Mattaponi River in the lower part of present day Caroline County, where he lived until his death in 1749. (581-582-589). This subject William(4) Hurt, son of the elder, appears to have moved to Amelia County, Va. in the early, to the middle, part of the 1750s and established his residence on the upper courses of Flat Creek on land patented by his father in 1734 and 1738 and in the same vicinity as where Hans Hendrick lived. This land was in Nottoway County when that county was created in 1788. William(4) Hurt lived there until his death in 1796.

This subject William(4) Hurt, son of the elder, married twice. I do not know the name of his first wife, but it may have been Rachel Hurt, (502). His second wife was Charity Hurt. According to his Will dated 6-31-1789, probated in December 1796 and recorded in Nottoway County, Va., Will Book 1, page 247, he had six children, all by his first wife, except John(5) Hurt who was a son of his second wife, Charity Hurt. The children were, viz:

(1) Benjamin(5) Hurt. His wife was Judith Forrest Hurt, daughter of Abraham and Judith Forrest of Nottoway County, Va. He died in Prince Edward County, Va. in 1776, the same year in which his father died. (49).

(2) William(5) Hurt, Jr. I believe that his wife, Sarah Hurt, was a daughter of Abraham and JudithForrest of Nottoway County and a sister of Judith Hurt, wife of William‘s brother, Benjamin Hurt, (49).

(3) John(5) Hurt. He was born on 9-8-1773 in that part of Amelia County that became Nottoway County in 1788 and died there on 9-18-1822. He inherited his father‘s home place on Flat Creek in theNorthwestern corner of present day Nottoway County and lived there all his life. He married Nancy (Ann) Newman, daughter of Rice Newman, in Amelia County, Va. by bond dated 4-13-1795. They had 11 children.

(4) Obadiah(5) Hurt. He married twice. He first married Winnie Beasley, in Prince Edward County, Va. by bond dated 5-19-1783. He married a second time to Nancy Davenport in Prince Edward County, Va. by bond dated 2-18-1802. He died in Prince Edward County in 1812 and left six children. (For the names of his children, etc., see 474).

(5) Elizabeth(5) Hurt. She married Matthew Robertson by bond in Amelia County, Va. dated 5-5-1785. She died in Amelia County in 1810, (80).

(6) Ann(5) Hurt. She married William Beasley. I do not know the date. She was already dead when her father made his Will in 1789. She had four children.
